Three Important Factors to Consider Before Decorating Your Living Room

The living room is a place that is meant for everyone to enjoy, both family and friends alike. Be sure to come up with a detailed design plan for decorating your living room to help you stay away from the traps leading to design catastrophes.

Delineate the Purpose of Your Living Room

Living Rooms should be designed according to what their primary use will be. Once the function of the living room is determined, decisions can be made on what the center point of the room will be such as a painting, a flat screen t.v., or a fireplace. All the design decisions should be made around the center point of the room in order to make the living room an enjoyable place to be in. This can be accomplished by arranging furniture effectively and not having individual pieces that stand out too much in the room.

Choosing the Type of Design

The next stage in the process is to figure out what type of design would work best for the room. There are a wide variety of options to consider such as contemporary, romantic, traditional, modern, and many more. The style chosen for the living room should meld well with other common areas in the home including the dining room, hallway, and kitchen. A common design style found in many homes today is contemporary or modern which offers a good variety of furniture styles and colors that will please both men and women's tastes. Some positive elements of these styles are their practicality and their ability to make the living room look larger, usable, and fashionable.

Choosing the Correct Furniture Style

The foundation of the living room is the furniture. The chosen furniture should be based on the price, the wear and tear the furniture will receive, and the accompanying items that will be placed in the room. A common mistake many people make when decorating is choosing furniture that doesn't match the other elements of the room such as the paint colors, windows, and art work on the walls. Because of this, the furniture choice should be made in the planning stages of the redesign and not in its concluding phase. The choice of furniture should be based on the colors found in the room along with the type of design used. A helpful hint in choosing furniture is to pick the three dominant colors found in the living room which can be done by looking at the floors, walls, or paintings and then to find furniture that matches these main colors.

When a person is educated on what the intent of a living room really it, then the proper decorating decisions can be made which lead to a room that has the best furniture, style, and accessories that will turn it into a room that everyone in the family will love.
