The Science Behind The Good Feelings Of Service

Apr 15th, 2011 Anthony Corrano

The news gives us a constant reminder of the issues that are happening all around us. There are natural disasters that happen, financial meltdowns of corporations, and poverty and hunger happening within our own country. Watching this news helps to make us aware of the problems that face our communities and country as a whole. While the government can only do so much, the responsibility relies on us as citizens to help to make this world a better place. For those that have helped others by serving them through donations of time and money, a good feeling can follow. Here are a few reasons why helping others can give you that good feeling you are searching for.

When you help another person, you put the needs of yourself aside and put the needs of another on the high priority list. When you start to forget about yourself, you also forget about the things that bring you down. For example, it's easy to think about all of the challenges that you face day in and day out, but when you are serving another person, these feelings and anxieties melt away as you are worrying about someone else. This causes you to have good feelings as you help to make that other person's life better.

Another reason for you to feel better when helping is to actually see the difference that your help can make in a person's life. For example, if you volunteer at a soup kitchen, you can see that the people are being fed a nutritious meal. While this sounds simple, it is something that can make you feel good because many of those people have not eaten for days, so the fact that they have a good meal to eat is something that not only can make you feel good, but it can sustain those people's lives and health. This type of service makes you feel good because you can emotionally connect with the basic needs that these people have and realize how much you take these simple basic needs for granted. This can give you a good feeling as you can detach yourself more from your own problems and focus on the problems of other people.

As you can see, helping others gives you a great feeling because you can stop worrying about yourself, and focus on making the lives of others better. When you see these positive changes start to happen for others, it can bring you the good feelings that everyone wants. If you are searching for this type of good feeling, start helping others to achieve it.
