Three Decorating Tips to Help You Plan an Attractive, Comfortable Living Room

Apr 11th, 2011 Bill McNeil

Your living room is the main area that your family uses in the evenings and where you will entertain guests. Because of its importance, you should plan carefully when you decorate your living room to make it as comfortable and accommodating as possible.

The first thing you should do is decide what the main purpose of the living room will be.

Then you can design your living room so it will best serve that purpose. The purpose will help you make a proper focal point in the room, whether it is to be a large screen television, works of art, or a cozy fireplace. Then the rest of the room can be designed so that everything else complements the focal point rather than competing for attention.

Then you should choose a design style.

This is the second important step in decorating your living area. Do you want a modern or contemporary decor, a country, traditional, or romantic style, or something else altogether? It is usually best to coordinate the living room style with the style of the rest of the house, especially the other common areas such as the dining room, kitchen, or hallways. Contemporary and modern decors are popular today, and you can find excellent furnishings in colors and styles that will suit your taste and create the effect you desire in your living room. They are also comfortable and functional, so your living room can be fashionable as well as a great place in which to relax or entertain company.

Third, choose your furniture carefully.

The furniture is the heart and soul of the living room. Your budget may limit your choices of furniture, but you should consider how much use a piece of furniture will get and the other furnishings of the room. A common mistake in decorating is to get a piece of furniture that is perfectly functional, but does not match the rest of the room such as the wall color, the artwork, or the other furnishings. The best way to avoid getting disparate pieces of furniture is to find sources and choose your furniture during the planning stage of your decorating project, and not wait until the end to go shopping. Then you can be sure that all the furnishings you buy coordinate with your chosen style and color scheme. A useful tip is to select three main colors to be used in your living room, perhaps colors that dominate in the room's artwork or wall, ceiling, and floor colors, then find furniture in shades that match those colors.

Once you know the main purpose for which you will be using your living room and have selected a decorating style, then you can choose furnishings that not only are attractive and go well together, but will also make a comfortable, inviting setting for your family and friends..
